I will see you for sure on my travels this weekend.

I received my ebay resistors from China in the mail many weeks earlier than expected.  I’ll tear the gauge cluster apart again and ask my buddy James to solder it up for me.

I got 20 of those to my mailbox for $2.56.  That’s a dime for size reference.

Got a little work on the Power steering gearbox yesterday and today.  For the most part it was cleaning the grime and sludge off the exterior, then wire wheeling off surface rust.  Looks so good as is, thinking about just hitting it with some clear coat. But semi-gloss black is just as easy.

I also rigged up a quick SST to mount the gearbox in my vice for the repair work.  I couldn’t crack loose any bolts without the vice, too dang tight.

    Before

    After

Yesterday I also straightened one of the LCA alignment tabs.  A few of them will need some hammering and welding a strip to the exterior.

I sure hope my vice doesn’t fail under the boredom of waiting for me to proceed with disassembly.

I made an attempt the other day, but got distracted and angered by the clutter of tools and crap on my work benches, so I cracked a beer and tidied instead.

Planning to buy some powersteering fluid needed for assembly on Monday, and make some actual progress.

Shout out to @finn for a pair of fenders from his viking hoarde!!  These are in great shape, and a little cleanup and rust prevention will keep these lookin’ perdy for years

Power steering fluid or ATF? What’s it say on the power steering cap?

Good catch Evan.  Throughout the manual it refers to coating everything in PS fluid, however the last step says to fill the reservoir with fluid “ATF DEXRON or DEXRON II”.    The Haynes manual called for the same fluid.

So ATF is what I’m after, as soon as I get these V-belts get off.

An upper rad hose, thermostat and gasket have been in my shopping cart a while, better order it up.  V-belt rubbing on upper hose.

    And failing thermostat gasket

Gonna have some actual  physical progress today.  Excited.

The deeper you dig, more shit you’ll find. Still having fun though.

Bought a $0.70 thermostat gasket, pull the old one out and find a large O-ring.  Wtf?  Both gasket and O-ring? More questions, must be time to continue digging.  My “Made in Taiwan” thermostat housing is not sitting flush to the intake manifold.  Held up a square to the mating surface, about 1.5-2mm gap, hence the double-gasket and still leaking. So a replacement housing is on order (tomorrow), about $30.

Next. Tried to install the temp sender to rig up my oem gauges, looking for a thread adapter from 1/2” NPT chevy block, to M16x1.5 sender.  Ebay found me one for$38 after shipping from USA.  Annoyed I need a $38 fitting for the $6 sender I’m installing.  Locally I bought 1/2” NPT to 3/8” NPT for $4, but M16 vs 3/8 leaves a pretty loosey goosey fit. Not sure if thread sealant will suffice, but I’m willing to try.  Can always order the expensive adaptor should this fail.

A fun day in the shop, despite actually fixing nothing.  Progress is great though 😀

I made a great attempt to catch the coolant I knew would pour out, had two catch basins and a funnel.  Still 75% was caught by the concrete floor.

Picking up my other V-belt and Upper Rad hose tomorrow, also will buy a tube of thread sealant and hope for the best.  Glob it on there really good.

The war chest coughed up some awesome stuff.  I’ll have to stick around longer next time, get an update on your LC and the 4Extra.

I did the honourable thing today and bought a M16x1.5 tap on ebay today for $5.  Even IF I have to buy a 45/64th drill, and a 1/2” NPT plug, it’ll still work out cheaper than the ebay adaptor. Best case scenario I can tap a couple and sell them myself as a conversion piece for $15.

RockAuto delivered the high-pressure power steering line today, so I gotta get it shortened and flared.  Really I’m out if excuses now to finish refurb on the steering gear. Perhaps while the girls at school tomorrow I’ll make some more progress.
