    Trying to keep the cobwebs out

    Last night in The Shop, a new project got pushed in.

    I picked up a 1985 Honda Magna V30 project bike off a Buddy for a great price. Last on the road in ‘07, my Buddy had it running (but poorly) about 5 years ago, been ignored since.

    My plan, clean the 4 carbs, get this bugger to run & idle, put it for sale. While for sale, prolly chip away at a few other NEED items, like tires, chain, fork seals.

    This is a neat bike, 500cc, V4 engine, with 11,500rpm redline. Originally claimed 83hp out of 500ccs. Stance like a small cruiser, should be a fun bike if it’s still around in spring time.

    Last night I got the front master cylinder cleaned up and the front brake fluid flushed and bled. After I did a repeat on the hydraulic clutch. Both levers feel awesome now.

    Last night in the shop, I deep cleaned all four carbs, making sure not to adjust anything.

    Had a tough time sourcing a choke cable, but stumbled across one from a Canadian distributor on eBay.

    The OEM air filter was long discontinued. Had to resort to user forums to find an alternative air filter. An air filter for a ‘05 smart car diesel is a near perfect match I hear. There was a carQuest alternate part number, called it in to my local and we’ll have it $25 tomorrow.

    I need to change the oil, smells pretty gassy from previous attempts to start.

    I gotta leak test the carbs before I install them.

    Found a locksmith willing to cut me a key to the given code for $80 & tax, seems steep to me. Still shopping around, gonna purchase a key blank to drive down my cutting costs hopefully.

    Changed the plugs. Got an air filter, perfect match with exception to an external metal cage around the paper filter elements.

    I scrubbed the airbox clean, it was a mouse home briefly.

    I need to rebuild the front brake master cylinder too, it is leaking out the side seal where the key plunges.

    Shifting gears, I am servicing the wheel bearings on ‘85 today, hoping to take the slight vibration, which becomes more vibration under brakes away. Front lugs weren’t tight enough, prolly my fault.
    Anyways, got passenger side nearly apart, need to figure out which brake fitting I want to attempt to separate to remove the caliper from the knuckle. Hoping to find the bearing in good shape, but needing more grease and pre-load

    Everything went smoothly. Only problem is my brake calliper is seizing up, explains all the burnt grease in the hubs and bearings. Gotta replace or rebuild before I cook this grease too.

    Then I’ll do the drivers side, assume it could use some fresh grease as well.

    Had a night to myself over the weekend, spent all of it (and the wee hours of the morning) in the shop… General tidy up was the goal, and the results. Finally got all the parts from the donor 4Runner put away, got my two spare motors tucked away to where I’m not tripping them, and got 12’ of workbench fully cleared off. Safe to say Im much closer to being winter-prepped in the shop.

    To do this week;
    Matts mini truck needs the alternator belt tightened, AGAIN! The anti-pivot / tension keeper just won’t stay put.
    I will try my hand at rebuilding a brake caliper on the ‘85 4Runner. Rebuild kit was $12 vs. $150 for a calliper.
    The Magna needs a battery, and master cylinder rebuild. With a battery though, ready enough for a first test ride in at least 5-years. I’ve got a buddy at work interested to buy it, just need to finish awakening from this slumber.

    Well a tidy shop has let me knock some tasks off lately.

    In no particular order;
    -new/used head unit and 4” dash speakers into Mini blue
    -driver and passenger wheel bearings service on Stockee (the ‘85 4Runner)
    -passenger side calliper rebuild
    -drag link service (I just learned it was serviceable on tuesday)

    My goal has been to increase the road manners on Stockee just a bit. The ‘50s car steering was a bit much to handle, hoping I’ve reduced a bunch of freeplay and darting.
